First, You will need to set up a “shop” of goodies for your kiddos. A trip to the Dollar Store or the Target Dollar Spot will give you plenty of choices to stock up your store with mini-erasers, pencils, stickers and figures that your kids will enjoy. I’ve also included items from my own children’s toy boxes that they no longer need or want. Place these items in 4 different baskets labelled by coin values: penny, nickel, dime and quarter. Of course the “hot ticket” items will go in the quarter bin!
Label your baskets with both the value and a picture of the coin to help your students distinguish the difference between the coins.
You will next need to provide your students with a piggy bank. I purchased disposable Tupperware tubs from the Dollar Store and cut a small slit in the lid large enough for the play coins.
Reward your students when with play coins when appropriate behavior is observed. This is an excellent way to point out desired behaviors in the classroom. Allow the students to serve as role models for their peers.
I have also had children deposit coins in the classroom piggy bank when an undesired behavior was observed. But soon, I found that keeping this system simply as a reward system, rather than focusing on undesired behaviors was most effective.
Your kids will be motivated to make better choices, “earn” shopping privileges while learning the value of coins at the same time!
