The Back to School Listening Center with QR Codes

This Back to School Listening Library includes 24 stories with SafeShare.tv QR codes and one Retelling Story Map. You can use these during your Daily 5 centers: Listen to Reading or as whole group Read Alouds!

All SafeShare.tv QR code links are safe to share with children without being afraid that they can get to potentially inappropriate content. Free of ads and outside links.

If you do not have access to a QR Code Reader, I have also provided a hyperlink to each story. You can simply click on the book cover and it will bring you right to the story.

Below, I have included a FREE Listening Center task card for you to try out. Simply download a QR Reader app from the app store (most school districts already have them available on your devices). Or simply click on the book cover to follow the SafeShare link:

A Back to School Listening Library: Included are 24 stories with SafeShare.tv QR codes and 1 Retelling Story Map. Perfect for your literacy centers, Read to Self and Listen to Reading rotations during Daily 5 and whole group Read Alouds during Reader's Workshop.

Once you print these out or project onto your smart board (students can scan the code from your smart board), assign a story for your Listening Center, whole group, small group or guided reading centers. There are enough stories included in this library for the whole month!

After reading, provide the children with a simple story map, sequencing map or related activity to complete after listening to enhance and assess comprehension. In addition to the stories, I have also included a simple Retelling Story Map (Characters, Setting, Problem & Solution).

If the videos are blocked for your kiddos, the links will work on your teacher workstation. You can project them on your smartboard for your whole class to view as a read aloud!

If you’re like me, you consider teaching a form of art. Having taught for 20 years, I have created many teaching resources, and here at The K Files, I would like to share them with you. As a mother of three boys and a “school mom” for my students, it is my belief that the classroom is a “home away from home”. From my home away from home…. …to yours.

I was afraid to give up my first grade library when I switched to third, thinking some of my students would still have the need for them. But that many? I may have hoarded them for three years. Time to let these go! I plan to share them with my colleagues.
Those of you who teach third, do you organize your books by reading level or topic?

When a student tries to “think about their thinking while reading”, they learn to recognize when comprehension breaks down and utilize a fix-up strategy to improve their comprehension.
Metacognition involves:
-Become aware of their thinking while they read
-Identify confusion and roadblocks that complicate comprehension
-Identify and utilize a strategy to improve comprehension
Also, check out the Guru anchor Charts© that were designed to help students take ownership of their learning. By assigning a reading strategy/skill guru to EACH of your students, you will have created a student-centered classroom. Your students will be engaged, excited and will become experts in their “field” and equipped to teach their classmates throughout the year.
