Classroom Management

A New Student!

A New Student!

You know the struggle!

Picture this, on a random day in the school year, your class is running smoothly and the children know your routines and (hopefully) everything is running like clockwork. Then you learn that you are soon to welcome a new student to your home away from home. If you’re lucky, you are made aware of this new development days ahead, or possibly minutes before the school day begins…

And so, your whole planning period is spent prepping your classroom to welcome your new addition to your home away from home. If you are like me, you have your Back to School extras ready at hand in a tote…

…somewhere…

…And this is when the LABELING mayhem begins…

You want your new addition to feel at home at soon as possible.  This little kiddo, for whatever reason has been uprooted, and now fortunately placed in YOUR classroom.  As a teacher, you want this transition to be a smooth one for them.  The last thing your student wants is to be known as “the NEW kid”.  There must be a great deal of “newness” in their life for whatever reason, so…

Be prepared!

At the beginning of the school year, when I am happily and furiously in labeling MADNESS, I always create FIVE extra of everything I need to label for each of my students.

Deskmates—cubby labels—mailbox labels—Math Journal labels—Word Work Notebook labels—Book Box labels—Parent Letters—Sight Word Ring Labels & letters—Supply labels—Word Wall Names—the numerous work book labels—Take Home Folder labels–Signature Folder labels, Writing Folder Labels—Writing Journal Labels—etc—

LABELS, LABELS, LABELS!!!

My best advice is to take the extra time at the beginning of the school year and create a baggy to house a blank “label” for everything that a new student will require to blend into their new home away from home.

Voila…
…you will still have half your planning period left to prep…
…and BREATHE!

If you’re like me, you consider teaching a form of art. Having taught for 20 years, I have created many teaching resources, and here at The K Files, I would like to share them with you. As a mother of three boys and a “school mom” for my students, it is my belief that the classroom is a “home away from home”. From my home away from home…. …to yours.

Time to go through all. the. books. After switchi Time to go through all. the. books. After switching grade levels a few years ago, our library needs a bit of reorganization.
I was afraid to give up my first grade library when I switched to third, thinking some of my students would still have the need for them. But that many? I may have hoarded them for three years. Time to let these go! I plan to share them with my colleagues.
Those of you who teach third, do you organize your books by reading level or topic?

When a student tries to “think about their thinking while reading”, they learn to recognize when comprehension breaks down and utilize a fix-up strategy to improve their comprehension.
Metacognition involves:
-Become aware of their thinking while they read
-Identify confusion and roadblocks that complicate comprehension
-Identify and utilize a strategy to improve comprehension
Also, check out the Guru anchor Charts© that were designed to help students take ownership of their learning. By assigning a reading strategy/skill guru to EACH of your students, you will have created a student-centered classroom. Your students will be engaged, excited and will become experts in their “field” and equipped to teach their classmates throughout the year.

The idea of dragging yourself into work to prepare sub plans and lay out all the materials needed for the day can be a dreaded task.
